1950: A new Companies Law for Jamaica is in the final stage of drafting, according to an official announcement. The bill, a compendious one, has been under consideration and attention by the law officers of the Crown for several years.


1955: Four British members of parliament, part of a fact-finding mission representing the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, arrive in Jamaica as guests of the Government. They are Ronald Russell, Arthur Allen, Joseph Reeves and Ted Leather.


1960: There is to be four eclipses during 1961, two of the sun and two of the moon, The first eclipse of the sun will be on February 15 next year. This will be a total eclipse. The second will be on August 11.


1964: Prime Minster Sir Alexander Bustamante takes over the portfolio of the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Communications and Works during the absence from the island of the Hon Donald Sangster and the Hon Ken Jones, respectively.


1968: Three different sub-committees, each one to study different aspects of the Mordecai Report on the Sugar Industry and to start reporting with recommendations within a fortnight, are set up by the Sugar Industry Advisory Council at its initial meeting.


1975: Farmers are losing millions of dollars as a result of this year’s drought now raging in many areas of the island. This claim is to be brought to the attention of the Government by the Jamaica Agricultural Society.


1980: Rail service between Anchovy and Montego Bay resumes, following a one-year suspension because a section of the railway line is damaged. Flood rains on June 12, 1979 caused extensive damage to two sections of the line between Anchovy and Montego Bay.
