August 20: “Banish The School Garden Days”
1956: The Three-man Federal Capital Fact-finding Commission appointed by the Secretary of State for the Colonies to recommend the three most suitable sites from which the capital of the Federated West Indies will be chosen, arrives in the Island.
1956: All the assets of Discovery Bay Company, Inc., have been purchased by Kaiser Bauxite Company. The purchase price is £90,000 climaxing one of the biggest real estate deals in St.Ann.
1964: The Prime Minister, Sir Alexander Bustamante P.C., comments on a statement issued by the People’s National Party, that he had not attacked the University of the West Indies as such in his own comments on the part taken by members of the University faculty in connection with the present discussion on the “Freedom of the Press”.
1968: The Minister of Education, Edwin Allen, announces that it is his aim to revolutionise small farming in Jamaica and banish the ‘school garden’ days, particularly in the rural areas.
1972: Fire guts a two-storey building at 37 Slipe Road, Kingston 5, housing Cycle Sales and Services Co. Ltd. Damage is put at $100,000. The building and stock owned by Mr. Vincent Nugent of 79 Lakeland Drive, Spanish Town, were insured.
1976: Because of continuing financial difficulty, Air Jamaica calls a top-level meeting for later this month to seek ways of broadening its revenue base. According to an Air Jamaica spokesman this comes at a time when the traditional markets continue to decline.
1982: Complaints that the quality of the water being supplied to Corporate Area users has declined significantly over the last few weeks was scouted by the N.WC. As the level of the water in the Hermitage Dam and in Mona Reservoir continue to drop, the presence of “suspended solids” in the water is said to be causing the water to be below the desired quality.
1985: Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica are to sign a memorandum of understanding aimed at increasing trade, Government sources reveal. The agreement, to be signed in Port-of-Spain within the next two weeks, is expected to lead to increased trade of up to US$80 million dollars, the sources reveal.
