1950: In the Chapleton Resident Magistrate Court, H.G.H. Duffus, resident magistrate for Clarendon, finds O.A. Malcolm, speaker of the House of Representatives, and his chauffeur, Josclyn Ham, guilty on the second charge preferred against them in connection with alleged election breaches. Malcolm was ordered to pay a fine of £20 or serve three months at hard labour and Ham £5 or 21 days at hard labour. The charge was that both defendants conveyed a voter – Panton Miller – to the polling station at Top Alston in the northwestern constituency of the parish on Election Day, December 20, last year.

1956: More than 100 ASTA delegates arriving in Ocho Rios, St Ann, for two days of sightseeing alight from the cabs that brought them from Kingston, accept welcome drinks from each of the ‘big five’ hotels, and then plunged
into the sea for their first swim. Showing as much enthusiasm as first-time travellers, these seasoned veterans of the world’s planes, trains and ships exclaimed with joy as they first sighted the turquoise water before Silver Seas, Jamaica Inn, Sans Souci, Tower Isle and Hibiscus Lodge hotels, and at the view from Shaw Park.

1961: Thossy Kelly gives strong support in the Legislative Council to the proposal made last week by Neville Ashenheim for the appointment of a national all-party committee to study and propose measures for the improvement of employment opportunities throughout the island. Kelly, who is also president of the National Workers’ Union, declared during a speech in the State of the Nation Debate in the Council that such a committee, if it drew upon the varied talents at large in the community without barriers of any sort, could serve a very useful purpose in the economic development programme of the island.

1964: A proposal to construct an aerial railway linking Kingston with the Blue Mountains has been placed before the Ministry of Trade and Industry and is under Government consideration, The Gleaner understands. The Ministry of Trade and Industry source states that nothing could be said about it at present, but intimated that the proposal was being considered.
