Unemployment Rate Continues To Trend Upwards

Jamaica’s  unemployment  rate  remains  a  concern. Despite  October 2013’s  unemployment  rate  of  14.9%  being  the  lowest since  January  2013’s  14.5%,  it  is  0.9 percentage  points  higher  than  October  2012.  October  2013’s  unemployment  rate  also represents  a  decline  in  the  rate  by  0.5  percentage  points  since  the  July 2013  period.

For  the  October  2013  period  unemployment  rate  for  males  was  10.6%,  this  represented  a  1.1  percentage  fall  in  the  rate from  July  11.7%  however  an  increase of  0.1%  when  compared  to  October 2012’s  10.5%.  On  the  other  hand,  the unemployment  rate  for  females  remained  higher  than  for  male’s.  Female unemployment  rate  increased  from  19.9%  for July 2013  to  20%.  When  compared  to  October  2012’s  18.3%  this  is  an  increase  of  1.7  percentage  points.
