Tourism Minister Hon. Dr. Wykeham McNeill in making his contribution to the 2013/14 sectoral debate in the House on July 2, 2013 made the statement that “based on market research Jamaica’s 2013 Summer Season prospects are bright for stop over arrivals”. The data that is available for the summer tourist season 2013- May to July reveal that stop over arrivals have increased by 1.1% to 552,921 from 546,871 for the corresponding period in 2012. However, stop over arrivals in July 2013 was 205,655 which represents a 2% decline in arrivals for the same period in 2012.
Cruise ship arrivals in July 2013 amounted to 79,946 passengers, representing a 7% increase over the 74,690 for July 2012. For the 2013 summer tourist season May to July cruise ship arrivals have declined by 7.9% to 221,607 in contrast to the 240,701 that was recorded for the corresponding period in 2012.
In July, total number of arrivals from both sources (stop over arrivals and cruise ship arrivals) was 285,601 passengers. This represents a mere 0.4% increase above the corresponding period in 2012, however a 10% rise over the 258,535 recorded for June 2013.
