How Much Does It Cost Taxpayers To Feed Prison Inmates Each Year?

Jamaicans are still talking about UK Prime Minister David Cameron’s visit last week, in which he announced a deal to provide a £25-million grant to construct a new prison on the island that would house ‘repatriated‘ Jamaican prisoners in the UK. The prison is expected to cost some $10 billion and will be constructed on lands adjacent to the Tamarind Farm prison in St Catherine.

An opinion piece in today’s edition of The Gleaner shed some light one of the concerns for local taxpayers – the costs associated with maintaining these prisoners, which they will be forced to bear. Below is an infographic outlining the cost to keep the inmates fed.
