
Today is Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day, and several local organisations have been making use of this technology to help institutions, companies and other agencies to leverage data when making critical business and planning decisions.
See some of these organisations below:
MonaGeoinformatics Institute (MGI)
One of the local authorities on the subject is the MGI at the University of the West Indies, Mona. The MGI delivers GIS courses for various departments and participates in campus research activities, as well as provides GIS services to companies and agencies in the public and private sectors.
The MGI offers services in:
- Human and Social Mapping
- Natural Hazards and Environment
- Satellite Imagery
- Software Development
- Technical Services
National Land Agency – The NLA has the country’s largest GIS infrastructure, with its flagship product being the eLand application.
Spatial Innovision – The company helps clients in a wide range of industries solve business problems by implementing GIS and GPS Solutions. These industries include urban planning and development, utilities, land management, telecommunications and insurance.
Ministry of Health – The MoH and the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF) collaborated to undertake GIS asset-based mapping in June 2006.
National Works Agency – Established in June 2002, the NWA’s GIS department has implemented a number of projects.
Other agencies that make use of GIS include the Land Information Council of Jamaica (LICJ), Ministry of Agriculture and the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ).
