She was born Portia Lucretia Simpson in Woodhall, St. Catherine, Jamaica, on December 12, 1945.

She entered politics in 1974 when she was elected as the People’s National Party (PNP) Trench Town representative in the Kingston & St Andrew Corporation city council.

She became Jamaica’s seventh prime minister, and first female prime minister, in March 2006.

She was awarded the Order of the Nation in May 2006.

In March 2007, she was awarded the International Olympic Committee’s World Women and Sport Trophy for outstanding dedication to women in Jamaican sports – both athletes and administrators.
