#ElectionJa – Meet Your MP: Dr Fenton Ferguson

Embattled Dr Fenton Ferguson, former Minister of Health and newly minted Minister of Labour and Social Security, is the incumbent Member of Parliament for the constituency of St Thomas Eastern. Here are some facts about him:

  1. He has been a dental surgeon for the past 33 years in the parish of St Thomas, and was the head dental surgeon in charge of the Ministry of Health’s Dental Health Services in the parish from 1978 to 1993.
  2. He is a past student of Ardenne High School in Kingston.
  3. He is a graduate of Howard University in the USA, where he made the dean’s list for three consecutive years while pursuing his BSc in Chemistry in 1974. He also gained a post-graduate degree in 1978, which made him a Doctor of Dental Surgery.
  4. Dr Ferguson entered representational politics in 1989 and in 1993, he was elected Member of Parliament for St Thomas Eastern. He has held that seat over five consecutive general elections, making him the longest serving MP for that constituency.
  5. He is an honorary member of the Lions’ Club of Portmore and chairman of the Saunders Basic School for the past 31 years.
