Earth Day 2014 – Green Cities

Today marks the 44th anniversary of Earth Day, which is being celebrated under the global theme ‘Green Cities.’ Earth Day Network launched the Green Cities campaign last fall in a bid to “help cities around the world become more sustainable and reduce their carbon footprint. Focused on three key elements – buildings, energy, and transportation – the campaign aims to help cities accelerate their transition to a cleaner, healthier, and more economically viable future through improvements in efficiency, investments in renewable technology, and regulation reform.”

Earth Day Network recognises that more than half of the world’s population lives in cities today. Climate change is already a serious issue to contend with and the effects will only worsen as urban populations grow. Therefore, our cities have to evolve. The Green Cities campaign will mobilise a global movement over the next two years to accelerate this transition.
