Vilma Charlton then and now

St Andrew High School has only one Champs victory, but it has made regular appearances in the top 10 and top five. Here are some facts:

  1. Vilma Charlton was the architect of the school’s 1962 Girls’ Champs victory, scoring 10 points from the 100m/200m class 2 sprint double. The following year, in class 1, she again took the double, equalling the 220 yards record of 26.1 seconds.
  2. Janet Burke erased Merlene Ottey‘s class 1 100m record in 1981, clocking 11.4 seconds. She also equalled Ottey’s 200m mark of 23.6 seconds.
  3. The school placed fourth in the 2003 edition of Champs, behind Holmwood Technical, St Jago and Vere Technical.
