What do Jamaicans love almost as much as we love music? Sports, of course! Especially track and field. And when it comes to that particular sport, nothing – save for the Olympics and World Championships – captures our attention like our national Boys and Girls Athletics Championships. Champs, as everyone calls it, never disappoints, with breath-taking, jaw-dropping performances by Jamaica’s junior athletes. Every year, keen rivalries are renewed, records are smashed, and new stars are born as high schools from every corner of the country battle for supremacy.
Champs 2015 will run from March 24-28, but here at diGJamaica, we’ve decided that there are just too many epic moments of Jamaican greatness that have occurred in the competition’s 105 years to limit our focus to five days. Therefore, we are celebrating Champs all month long! We’ll be profiling the schools and athletes to look out for, the stars that Champs made, breaking down the heated rivalries, going behind the scenes to find out how such a major event gets off the ground, raiding the archives for historical pictures that only The Gleaner can bring you, and so much more.
As usual, we’ll have some giveaways as well, so look out for the trivia questions during Champs week! Follow our hashtag #idiGChamps on social media to keep track (no pun intended).
Who are you repping for Champs?
