Jamaica recently marked the 181st anniversary of Emancipation Day on Saturday, August 1, and will celebrate 53 years of independence from England on Thursday, August 6. Those are great reasons to celebrate, and so we shall, all month long on the diGJamaica.com blog!
Join us for posts, infographics and photos celebrating traditional cultural symbols and events, significant moments and ‘firsts’ in Jamaica’s history and little known facts about our country. We’ll also have recipes, events calendars, historical photos from The Gleaner‘s archive and much more.
In addition to Emancipendence, it’s also diGJamaica.com’s third birthday, and to celebrate, we’re giving the gifts to you, our readers and followers. Look out for our photo contest themes each weekend. More information will be provided on this soon.
We’re also celebrating the civic engagement of Jamaica’s young people on International Youth Day, August 12 and our humanitarian organisations on the 19th.
Finally, the IAAF World Championships in Beijing, China are coming up on the 22nd, and we know Jamaicans will have reasons to celebrate as our athletes sprint, jump and throw to bring home the gold medals. We look forward to their exploits!
