    The United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID) is responsible for implementing America’s foreign assistance programs to help developing countries, like Jamaica, achieve sustainable development. USAID’s work supports long-term and equitable economic growth and advances U.S. foreign policy objectives by supporting: economic growth, agriculture and trade; global health; and, democracy, conflict prevention and humanitarian assistance. In addition to the Latin America and the Caribbean, USAID provides assistance in: Sub-Saharan Africa; Asia; Europe and Eurasia; and The Middle East. With headquarters in Washington, DC, USAID's strength is its field offices around the world. The agency works closely with private voluntary organizations, other governments, indigenous organizations, universities, American businesses, international agencies, and other US government agencies.

    In Jamaica, USAID’s 2010 to 2014 Country Assistance Strategy program focuses on:  increasing peace and security; promoting economic prosperity and sustainable development; and investing in people through education and HIV/AIDS prevention.  Youth development remains a key area of focus across all program areas.
