    The Jamaica Employers’ Federation was formed in 1958 and registered as a trade union (of employers) under the Trade Union Act of 1919.

    The major policy-making body is the Council which elects an Executive Committee. There is a President, a 1st and a 2nd Vice-President. The Secretariat, headed by the Chief Executive Officer, is responsible for ensuring that the objectives of the Organization, the policy and directions of the Council and Executive Committee are achieved.

    The President has appointed a number of sub-committees to assist him in achieving the objectives of the Federation. These sub-committees work with the Secretariat in an advisory and functional capacity.

    The President and the two Vice-Presidents do not have an executive role and are elected each year. They set policy and issue guidance and directives to the Secretariat. The Federation participates in several national tripartite bodies – e.g. Labour Advisory Committee, Apprenticeship Committee, National Minimum Wage Advisory Commission, National Insurance Board, Productivity Council, National Planning Council, the Planning Institute of Jamaica, Labour Market Information System and several other bodies. It is on the Executive of the Private Sector Organization of Jamaica and on the Executive of the Workplace Development Consortium.

    Services to its members cover such areas as advice on industrial relations, application and interpretation of labour laws and standards, workplace and human resources development through training seminars, and programmes geared to increasing productivity, information and research in the employment field, such as the annual production of a Salary, Wage and Benefits Survey for executive, managerial, supervisory, clerical and hourly rated employees. The JEF lobbies extensively in such areas as labour legislation.

    JEF is a member of the Private Sector Organization of Jamaica, where it sits on the Executive.


    The membership within the federation stands at over 200, including individual companies, corporations (many of which have in excess of 20 subsidiaries) and associations. Membership covers all sectors of economic activity, including: services, manufacturing, agriculture, telecommunications, construction, mining and transportation, as well as public corporations. It does not cover Government departments.


    JEF is a member of the International Labour Organization (ILO), the International Organization of Employers (IOE) and of the Caribbean Employers' Confederation (CEC).
