March is celebrated as Spiritual Wellness Month. It is a time to reflect on the values, ethics and morals that add value and give meaning to your life. Here at diGJamaica, we’re going on a quest for 30 days of inspiration: extracting the common principles from different religions and systems of belief that help their followers to find inner peace, purpose and direction. Each day for the month of March, we will be sharing another principle with you. Join us as we embark on this journey to spiritual wellness.

Gratitude – the habit of saying thanks or giving thanks – is a powerhouse emotion. Developing an attitude of gratitude increases happiness in every area of your life. Why? Because the habit of continually giving thanks changes you from the inside out. It subtly shifts your focus from what you do not have, to identifying and appreciating the positives already present in your life. Gratitude is good for you. It builds your internal strength and capacity to withstand hardships because, even in the middle of a terrible situation, your brain will be programmed to find something to be grateful for – and that one thought has the power to dramatically uplift your spirits and renew your energy.

An attitude of gratitude will also improve your relationships, work performance and overall health. It also reduces stress and tension. Here are some other benefits of gratitude:

Here are some ways that you can cultivate gratitude in your life on a daily basis:
- Every morning as you wake up and every night before you go to bed, list three things that you are grateful for
- Start noticing the simple pleasures in life. Be deliberate. Look for them.
- Start thinking of things to thank people for as you go through your day.
- Make a list of 30 things that you are grateful for. Read it once daily.
