Now that summer is officially here and schools are getting ready to close for the holiday, it’s time to plan some fun activities to keep the children occupied – and entertain your own inner child. Let’s give the typical beach day a break this Travel Tuesday and head to the nearest zoo!
Hope Zoo (Zoo Kingston) – Hope Road, Kingston: Jamaica’s national zoo has been undergoing a long period of upgrading and renovation and is now shaping up to be first class facility. Come out and see the zebras, feed the budgies, marvel at the king of the jungle, Lucas the lion and more. The zoo offers group tours, a petting area and several venues that can be rented to host events. Opening hours are 10am to 5pm every day. For more information, call 927-1085. Serenity Park – Spring Village, St Catherine: The Guardsman Serenity Park is a wildlife sanctuary that boasts a generous collection of exotic birds and animals, including ostriches and emus, iguanas, snakes and llamas. It also features a farm, man-made fishing ponds, a scrimmage field, a playground and more. The park offers a petting zoo and tours for children or the whole family.
Serenity Park is located about eight miles outside of Spanish Town. Take the main road to Old Harbour from Spanish Town and make a right on Spring Village Road. The park is about half a mile up Spring Village Road. For more information, call 708-5515.
Jamaica Zoo – Lacovia, St Elizabeth: Jamaica Zoo boasts 25 different kinds of animals and birds, including lions, llama, zebras, monkeys, crocodiles, snakes, toucans and more. It offers a petting area, where visitors can take pictures with the animals, as well as picnic areas and a playground for children, complete with donkey rides.
