Image Of The Week: Merlene Ottey

The legendary Merlene Ottey was in Jamaica this week to receive an Honorary Doctor of Technology – Sport award from the University of Technology.

Merlene Ottey became the first female athlete in the English-speaking Caribbean to win an Olympic medal when she won bronze in the 200m in 1980 and became the oldest woman to ever win an Olympic medal with her final one, her silver medal as part of the 4×100 m Jamaica team at the 2000 Sydney games.

In this image from The Gleaner Archives, there is Merlene Ottey in full flight on the track in the Jamaican national colours.

A citizen of Slovenia since 2001, this nine-time Olympic medallist is preparing to represent that country again in August 2013 at the IAAF World Championships in Moscow, almost 30 years since her first appearance at the event in 1983.

Merlene Ottey is now 52 years old.
